The Gastro Grill
A chef, his family,
a food truck,
and their labor of love.
After graduating from Le Cordon Blue in San Francisco in 1992, Chef Reyes Chacon moved home and worked as a Sous/Pastry Chef at several Fresno favorites including Smugglers Inn, Sunnyside Country Club, DJ Hills Bar & Grill and Christiansons Food World. Reyes was later approached to open a restaurant in Fig Garden Village as the Executive Chef. He cooked everything on a grill in front instead of building a kitchen to save the owners money, and so they named it The Patio Cafe! Reyes later decided that 16-hour work days were not worth the time spent away from his family. He went to work for the City of Fresno as a laborer to now a Senior Heavy Equipment Operator. After marrying, Reyes and Debbi together started a catering business in 2001 (Chacon's Catering) for family and friends, fun, and vacation money.
In 2011, Debbi watched a show on the Food Network called The Great Food Truck Race, and immediately knew this was her husband's true calling. At first Reyes watched reluctantly, but soon his eyes - and heart - were glued to this concept. With help from family and close friends who believed in the Chacons, they bought an old food truck, fixed it up, and launched in June 2014.
Debbi & Reyes often work alongside their family (and sometimes friends!) and hope to pass along their business and passion for food onto their children and grandchildren. Reyes is a true artist, and the love and creativity he has for food is insurmountable. Sharing this gift from God with family is what makes him happy. The Chacons' humility and love for Christ is what gives them the strength to overcome all the ups and downs of owning a business (it also helps when the Warriors win!). With God, all things are possible!
